The definition of search visibility is changing as consumers increasingly use conversational AI alongside traditional search engines. Connecticut digital marketing agency Stratedia says its brand is appearing in both conventional Google results and AI-generated responses to queries related to SEO and digital marketing, highlighting how agencies are beginning to treat AI search visibility, SEO and local search as parts of the same discovery strategy.
For years, digital marketing agencies have largely measured search visibility through rankings, organic traffic, Google Maps placement and lead generation. The emergence of AI-powered search is adding another layer: whether a business is recognized, understood and referenced when users ask conversational platforms for recommendations.
Stratedia, led by founder and CEO Steve Bibby, says it is increasingly seeing its own brand surface across these environments. The agency positions the development as an extension of its existing SEO work rather than a replacement for conventional search optimization.
“Google rankings and Maps visibility remain extremely important,” Bibby said. “But businesses also have to start thinking about how they are represented when someone asks an AI platform for a recommendation.”
That shift reflects a broader change in how search marketing is being defined. Gartner published research in July 2026 describing SEO, answer engine optimization (AEO) and generative engine optimization (GEO) as increasingly connected disciplines as AI-powered search changes how information is discovered and consumed.
For agencies, the implication is significant. Traditional SEO focuses heavily on making web pages discoverable and competitive in search results. AI-oriented optimization adds questions around whether a company's information is sufficiently clear, authoritative and consistent for language models and answer engines to interpret.
Stratedia says its approach now considers factors including website architecture, local search presence, structured data, business citations, authoritative content, public relations and brand mentions alongside conventional keyword optimization.
The distinction matters because an AI-generated answer may not send a user directly to a company's website. Gartner noted in September 2026 that answer engines can increasingly satisfy discovery and evaluation needs without generating a traditional website click, creating new measurement challenges for marketers.
This creates a different definition of search performance. A company may need to monitor not only rankings and traffic but also how frequently it is mentioned in AI answers, whether its content is cited and how accurately its business is represented.
Gartner has specifically identified metrics such as Share of Answer, Citation Presence, Brand Mention Frequency and AEO-Influenced Conversions as potential additions to traditional search measurement.
Stratedia is also using its own marketing as a testing environment. Bibby says the agency wants to apply AI-search strategies to its own brand before recommending similar approaches to clients.
“We're testing these strategies on ourselves,” Bibby said. “If we're telling a client that search is changing and that visibility in AI matters, I want Stratedia competing there too.”
The agency's business growth provides another dimension to the announcement. According to Inc., Stratedia is a 2026 Inc. 5000 honoree ranked No. 3,421, following appearances in the 2025 and 2024 rankings. Inc.'s company profile lists the agency at 84% three-year growth.
AI search is creating a more fragmented discovery environment in which Google Search, local search, AI-generated answers and conversational research can all influence the customer journey.
Gartner's June 2026 research says marketers should treat LLMs as part of a broader exploration strategy alongside SEO, SEM and AEO rather than viewing AI as a direct replacement for search.
That approach also changes the competitive landscape for SEO agencies. Firms increasingly need capabilities spanning technical SEO, content, local search, structured information, digital PR and brand authority rather than relying exclusively on keyword rankings.
The challenge is measurement. Traditional SEO platforms can report rankings, backlinks and organic traffic, while newer answer-engine visibility tools are beginning to track how brands appear in AI-generated responses. Gartner's March 2026 Market Guide for Answer Engine Visibility Tools identifies this emerging category as a way for marketing leaders to evaluate brand visibility in LLM-powered search.
For smaller businesses, the transition could be particularly important because local-intent queries such as “SEO companies near me” or service-specific searches can combine traditional rankings, maps, reviews, business information and AI recommendations.
Stratedia's positioning illustrates how the SEO industry is moving from ranking optimization toward broader digital discoverability.
The development does not mean conventional SEO has become obsolete. Search rankings, local visibility, website performance and conversions remain important business metrics. Instead, AI introduces another discovery layer that agencies need to understand and measure.
The more difficult question will be attribution. If a prospective customer discovers a company through an AI-generated recommendation, researches it through Google, checks reviews and eventually converts through a website or phone call, no single ranking metric captures the entire journey.
For SEO agencies, the next stage of competition may therefore involve proving visibility across multiple discovery environments while connecting those signals to actual business outcomes.
