SmarterSends Adds Two-Way SMS and Retargeting to Braze

SmarterSends is expanding the role of local marketing teams inside Braze with two new capabilities designed to turn outbound campaigns into ongoing customer conversations.

The distributed marketing platform has launched Two-Way SMS and One-Click Retargeting for Braze customers. The additions extend SmarterSends' existing email, SMS, push and in-app capabilities while keeping local activity within the brand-level approvals, permissions and reporting established in Braze.

For franchises, financial advisors, regional branches and multi-location retailers, the update addresses two different problems: what happens when a customer responds to a message, and how local teams can re-engage existing contacts without depending on corporate marketing teams to build another campaign.

Turning SMS Replies Into Customer Data

The most significant change is Two-Way SMS, which connects inbound text responses to the customer's existing Braze profile.

Previously, a customer replying to a local branch or representative could effectively move the conversation outside the marketing technology stack, leaving the response on an individual's phone. SmarterSends' integration is designed to bring that interaction back into the customer engagement workflow.

A customer indicating interest could become a lead for the nearest store, while a scheduling question could be routed to the appropriate advisor. That creates a more direct connection between automated marketing journeys and human follow-up.

The capability effectively extends Braze's customer profiles from a record of outbound engagement into a channel for localized, two-way conversations.

One-Click Retargeting Targets Local Campaign Friction

SmarterSends is also simplifying retargeting for local operators.

One-Click Retargeting allows franchisees and other local teams to re-engage contacts they already manage. Use cases include resending campaigns to non-openers, following up with people who responded but did not convert, and reactivating inactive contact lists.

The objective is less about creating another sophisticated automation layer and more about removing operational friction. Local operators typically do not have the time or marketing expertise to construct campaigns from scratch, while corporate teams may not have the resources to manage every local follow-up.

SmarterSends is effectively positioning its interface as a controlled local execution layer on top of a centralized Braze environment.

Why the Integration Matters

The development comes as customer engagement platforms increasingly move toward conversational and AI-assisted journeys. Braze has built its platform around centralized customer data, orchestration and personalization, while SmarterSends is focusing on the operational challenge of extending those capabilities across distributed organizations.

The distinction is important. A national brand can maintain centralized messaging standards while allowing hundreds of stores, branches or advisors to respond to customers and run localized follow-ups.

SmarterSends says the integration can be deployed in about 15 minutes without a cost to the brand. Its two new capabilities also differentiate the offering from what Braze provides natively, particularly around inbound reply routing and simplified local retargeting.

Market Landscape

The distributed marketing model is becoming increasingly relevant as brands attempt to balance centralized governance with localized customer relationships.

Traditional marketing automation platforms are strong at orchestrating campaigns at scale, but local execution can introduce additional complexity around permissions, brand consistency, data access and campaign creation. SmarterSends is targeting that gap rather than attempting to replace the underlying engagement platform.

The competitive environment includes customer engagement and marketing automation platforms such as Salesforce, Adobe and Braze itself. The differentiation increasingly comes from how easily these systems can support decentralized teams while preserving enterprise governance.

For enterprise marketing organizations, the larger lesson is that personalization is moving beyond message selection. The next stage involves connecting automated journeys to local employees who can act on customer intent in real time.
