Rainbow Digital Commercial has opened an upgraded supermarket in Shenzhen that brings Store Digital Twin technology into a live retail environment, connecting IoT data, artificial intelligence, customer-facing digital touchpoints and store operations.

The Shahe sp@ce supermarket represents Rainbow's first Store Digital Twin-enabled project. Developed with Hanshow and Rainbow's technology subsidiary Lingzhi Digital Technology, the implementation is designed to give store teams a unified view of operating conditions while connecting data-driven insights with decisions and physical execution.

The project illustrates a broader shift in retail technology: digital transformation is moving beyond individual tools such as electronic shelf labels or smart carts toward integrated systems that connect the physical store with a continuously updated digital representation.

From Physical Store to Digital Operating Layer

The Shenzhen supermarket incorporates more than 17,000 IoT devices and AI capabilities, according to the companies. These technologies collect information from connected store touchpoints and feed it into the Store Digital Twin infrastructure.

For retailers, the potential value is less about creating a digital replica for visualization and more about using real-time information to identify operational issues and coordinate responses. Shelf availability, merchandising execution, replenishment and store tasks can become connected parts of a single operating workflow.

Hanshow's electronic shelf labels and location intelligence capabilities form part of this infrastructure. Its Nebular Ultra Electronic Shelf Labels are positioned as interactive touchpoints rather than simply digital price displays, allowing shoppers to access product information, traceability details, usage guidance and promotional content.

That expands the role of the shelf from a physical merchandising surface into a digital customer-engagement channel.

Connecting Customer Experience With Store Operations

The customer-facing layer also includes Hanshow's NexConnect Smart Cart, integrated with Lingzhi's AI shopping assistant. The system provides product information, in-store navigation, promotional offers and checkout-related information during the shopping journey.

The approach reflects a growing convergence between customer experience technology and operational systems. Rather than deploying AI exclusively for marketing campaigns or customer service, retailers can use it alongside physical infrastructure to influence how shoppers discover products while simultaneously improving how stores respond to demand.

For marketing teams, this creates opportunities to connect promotions and product content more closely with physical context. For operations teams, the same infrastructure can provide information about inventory and shelf conditions.

AI Extends the Digital Twin Beyond Visibility

The project also combines electronic shelf labels with location intelligence, AI vision and robotics to support out-of-stock identification, merchandising management and shelf execution.

Lingzhi Digital Technology contributes its Bailingniao retail AI model for areas including sales forecasting, replenishment strategies, task management and decision support.

This is an important distinction in the development of retail digital twins. A system that merely represents store conditions provides visibility; a system connected to forecasting, task management and execution can potentially become an operational decision layer.

The distinction matters as retailers attempt to manage increasingly complex omnichannel environments. Rainbow's intelligent fulfilment center at the supermarket also supports home delivery, connecting the physical shopping environment with its broader omnichannel model.

Market Landscape

Retailers are increasingly combining AI, IoT, computer vision, robotics, electronic shelf labels and omnichannel technology. The competitive opportunity is shifting toward platforms that can connect these technologies rather than operating them as isolated systems.

Rainbow's implementation is notable because it applies Store Digital Twin capabilities to an operating supermarket rather than presenting the technology solely as a pilot or visualization project.

Strategic Outlook

The next stage of retail digitalization will likely depend on how effectively data can move from sensing to action. For marketers, that could mean more context-aware promotions and product experiences; for retailers, it could mean faster responses to availability, merchandising and fulfillment issues.

The Shenzhen deployment provides an example of how physical retail can become part of an integrated digital operating model rather than remaining separate from a retailer's technology stack.
