MERGE is acquiring the Insight and Digital practices of St. Louis-based Brado, combining qualitative research, performance marketing and generative engine optimization as healthcare marketers adapt to AI-led consumer discovery.
The Chicago-headquartered marketing and technology agency said the transaction will bring Brado's two practices into its existing strategy, creative, performance and media operations. MERGE serves more than 160 health, life sciences and wellness clients across North America, according to the company.
The acquisition reflects a broader shift in healthcare marketing: consumers increasingly research conditions, treatments and care options through digital channels before or alongside conversations with healthcare professionals. For agencies, that is expanding the definition of search optimization from conventional search-engine rankings toward visibility within AI-generated answers.
MERGE said the transaction is intended to combine Brado's qualitative research capabilities with digital performance, analytics and generative engine optimization (GEO). Financial terms were not disclosed.
Healthcare decision-making is increasingly distributed across physicians, search engines, social platforms, health websites and conversational AI.
The 2026 EY Global Consumer Health Survey, cited by MERGE, found that 89% of respondents trust their healthcare providers, while consumers are also using digital channels to inform health choices and treatment requests. That combination is significant for healthcare marketers: digital discovery does not necessarily replace professional advice, but it can influence what questions patients ask and which treatment options they investigate.
The emergence of generative search adds another layer.
Traditional SEO largely focuses on helping a page appear prominently in a list of search results. GEO seeks to improve the likelihood that a brand, organization or piece of evidence is represented accurately within AI-generated responses.
For pharmaceutical and healthcare companies, that creates a particularly sensitive challenge. AI-generated answers can influence perceptions of diseases, therapies and providers, making accuracy, source quality and regulatory compliance central to discoverability strategies.
MERGE is integrating the acquired practices in different parts of its organization.
The Brado Insight team will align with MERGE's design and strategy capabilities, led by Chief Design Officer Cait Vlastakis Smith. Its qualitative research and co-creation methodologies are intended to provide deeper understanding of patient, caregiver and consumer motivations before creative and communication strategies are developed.
The Brado Digital team will join MERGE's Integrated Outcomes organization under Chief Performance Officer John Bracey. Its capabilities include media, data analytics, channel strategy and GEO.
That structure effectively connects two traditionally separate stages of marketing: understanding why people make decisions and determining how brands can be discovered when those decisions begin online.
MERGE CEO Stephanie Trunzo described the strategy as combining human empathy with digital precision. The company's broader positioning centers on its proprietary Humanity Suite, which brings together human insight, creative strategy and technology.
The transaction is part of a wider restructuring of the agency market as clients demand more integrated data, media, creative and technology capabilities.
Large agency groups have been expanding their technology and consulting businesses, while independent agencies are acquiring specialist firms in areas such as data, commerce, performance media and AI.
The competitive rationale is straightforward. AI is reducing the differentiation of some traditional execution services while increasing demand for strategy, proprietary data, governance and specialized implementation expertise.
Generative search is particularly relevant because it is still an evolving discipline. Unlike traditional SEO, where established ranking signals provide a relatively mature optimization framework, AI visibility depends on factors such as source authority, entity understanding, content structure, citations and the behavior of individual AI systems.
For healthcare marketers, the challenge is compounded by the need for medically credible information and careful oversight of claims.
The growth of AI-generated discovery could change how consumers encounter healthcare information.
Google's AI Overviews, Microsoft's Copilot, OpenAI's ChatGPT and other conversational systems increasingly provide synthesized answers rather than requiring users to navigate multiple websites. This does not eliminate conventional search, but it creates another discovery layer.
For healthcare brands, appearing in these environments is less about inserting keywords and more about establishing credible, machine-readable information that AI systems can understand and reference.
That makes GEO increasingly connected to content strategy, digital PR, medical education, SEO, data governance and reputation management.
The acquisition gives MERGE capabilities across several of those functions, although the effectiveness of its GEO offering will ultimately depend on measurable visibility and business outcomes rather than the existence of the service itself.
The other side of the transaction is qualitative research.
AI can process large amounts of behavioral data, but healthcare decisions are often influenced by fear, uncertainty, social context, previous experiences and individual beliefs. Understanding those factors can determine whether a message resonates with a patient or caregiver.
Brado's Insight practice is intended to strengthen that human layer. Its integration with MERGE's creative and strategy teams could allow research findings to feed directly into campaigns, content and experience design.
That combination also reflects an emerging tension in AI-led marketing: automation can increase scale, but healthcare brands still need to understand the people behind the data.
The healthcare marketing agency market is moving toward integrated capabilities across:
Traditional agency boundaries are becoming less distinct as clients seek fewer handoffs between research, creative, media, technology and measurement.
MERGE's acquisition of Brado fits that consolidation pattern while giving the company a more explicit position in GEO and AI-driven discovery.
The transaction suggests that healthcare agencies are preparing for a marketing environment in which search is no longer limited to conventional search engines.
For brands, the challenge will be maintaining visibility and credibility across both traditional and generative discovery while ensuring that information remains accurate and compliant.
MERGE's combination of qualitative research and digital performance could provide a stronger foundation for that environment, particularly if it can connect human insight to measurable changes in discovery, engagement and commercial outcomes.
The larger competitive question is whether agencies can turn GEO from an emerging service category into a measurable discipline. As AI search adoption increases, healthcare marketers are likely to demand evidence that visibility in AI-generated answers translates into qualified engagement, patient education or other business objectives.
