Forcepoint has appointed Vincent Merlin as Chief Marketing Officer, adding a veteran enterprise cybersecurity marketer to its leadership team as the company focuses on securing corporate data amid the rapid adoption of generative and agentic artificial intelligence.
Merlin will report to Forcepoint CEO Ryan Windham and oversee global marketing functions spanning brand, demand generation, product marketing and analyst relations. The appointment comes as cybersecurity vendors increasingly reposition their offerings around the risks created when AI systems gain access to sensitive enterprise information and act on behalf of employees.
Forcepoint is using the term AI data security to describe this emerging category, positioning control over data accessed and processed by AI systems as a central enterprise security issue.
Merlin joins Forcepoint after a decade at Proofpoint, where he held several senior marketing positions and most recently served as Senior Vice President of Global Growth Marketing.
According to Forcepoint, Merlin's responsibilities at Proofpoint covered the company's global marketing organization and inside-sales functions. During his tenure, Proofpoint expanded from approximately $400 million to more than $2.4 billion in annual recurring revenue.
That experience is particularly relevant to Forcepoint as cybersecurity vendors increasingly compete not only on technical capabilities but also on category positioning, enterprise demand generation and the ability to explain complex security problems to boards and business leaders.
Before Proofpoint, Merlin held marketing leadership positions at AVEVA, Dell EMC and RSA. He holds an MBA from the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth and an engineering degree in quantum photonics and optics from Institut d'Optique Graduate School.
Forcepoint's decision to emphasize AI data security reflects a broader shift in enterprise cybersecurity.
Organizations are moving beyond traditional chatbots and experimentation toward AI agents that can access applications, databases, documents and business workflows. That expansion creates a different risk profile from conventional generative AI because autonomous systems can potentially retrieve, modify or transmit information without the same level of direct human intervention.
The security market is responding with a growing range of approaches, including data loss prevention, identity and access controls, AI governance, cloud security, application security and security platforms designed specifically for AI workloads.
For vendors such as Forcepoint, the competitive challenge is therefore partly technical and partly definitional: establishing where AI data security sits within an increasingly overlapping cybersecurity technology stack.
Forcepoint's positioning centers on maintaining control over enterprise information as AI systems interact with it.
The rise of agentic AI adds another layer of complexity.
Traditional software generally performs predefined tasks based on user instructions. AI agents can potentially interpret objectives, select tools and take multiple actions across connected systems. As organizations deploy these capabilities, security teams must consider not only who has access to data but also what an AI system can do with that access.
This creates questions around authorization, data boundaries, monitoring, auditability and policy enforcement.
The issue is becoming increasingly important as enterprises connect AI tools to internal knowledge bases, customer records, financial systems and productivity applications.
Forcepoint's messaging suggests it intends to compete around this control layer, linking data protection with the governance of AI interactions.
AI security is becoming a crowded market, with established cybersecurity companies and specialist startups addressing different parts of the technology stack.
Companies including Microsoft, Palo Alto Networks, CrowdStrike and Cisco have expanded AI-related security capabilities across their broader platforms. Data-security and cloud-security vendors are similarly adapting products to address AI-generated data flows and access patterns.
Research also indicates the enterprise AI security market is developing rapidly. Gartner has projected that by 2026, more than 80% of enterprises will use generative AI APIs or applications, up from less than 5% in 2023. This expansion increases the number of enterprise environments where AI-related security controls could become necessary.
The competitive environment means Forcepoint will need to demonstrate more than a new category label. It will need to show how its controls operate across real enterprise AI deployments and how those controls complement existing security infrastructure.
Merlin's appointment gives Forcepoint a marketing leader with experience scaling a cybersecurity business and communicating security technology to enterprise buyers.
His immediate remit covers both demand generation and category development, suggesting Forcepoint is pursuing two objectives simultaneously: expanding pipeline and establishing AI data security as a distinct purchasing category.
The distinction could matter as enterprises evaluate whether AI security should be handled through existing cybersecurity controls or through dedicated technologies.
Forcepoint will also need to translate its AI-security positioning into measurable business outcomes. Security leaders increasingly evaluate new technologies according to risk reduction, operational efficiency, compliance requirements and integration with existing security operations.
Merlin's background in global growth marketing may therefore become particularly relevant as Forcepoint attempts to convert emerging AI security concerns into enterprise demand.
The company is scheduled to feature Merlin alongside executives, customers and industry leaders at Forcepoint AWARE: Decoding Agentic AI Security, a free virtual event planned for September 16, 2026.
