Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is becoming a growing part of holiday marketing strategies as retailers prepare for shoppers using AI-powered search alongside conventional search engines. Fiverr's 2026 Holiday Marketing Index found that 67% of surveyed search specialists reported increasing demand for GEO, compared with 56% reporting greater demand for optimization aimed at Google rankings. The findings point to a broader shift in which retailers are combining AI-enabled workflows with human expertise across search, content and e-commerce.
Holiday marketing is becoming a multi-surface discovery challenge. Consumers can encounter brands through traditional search results, AI-generated answers, social platforms, creator content and online storefronts, forcing retailers to coordinate visibility across channels rather than treating search as a single acquisition pathway.
Fiverr's latest index, based on a survey of hundreds of top-rated freelancers across eight countries, offers a snapshot of how specialists are seeing that shift play out ahead of the 2026 holiday season. The report found that 67% of search specialists surveyed saw rising retailer demand for GEO, while 56% reported increased demand for optimization targeting Google rankings. Fiverr's internal marketplace data also indicates that GEO services increased 29% over a six-month period from November 2025 through April 2026.
The findings do not suggest that traditional SEO is disappearing. In fact, 61% of the surveyed search specialists still identified Google SEO as the strongest long-term investment. Fiverr's recommendation is to treat the two disciplines as complementary: SEO builds the underlying authority and discoverability of a website, while GEO addresses how that information can surface in AI-generated answers.
That distinction is becoming increasingly relevant as AI interfaces change how consumers research products. Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, alongside third-party conversational systems, introduce additional pathways through which product information and brand recommendations can reach potential buyers.
Discovery, however, is only one part of the holiday funnel. Fiverr's research found that 69% of UGC freelancers surveyed reported increasing holiday demand, reflecting retailer interest in creator-produced video for platforms including Meta and TikTok. UGC creators are also incorporating AI into their own workflows, particularly for scripting, ideation and research, suggesting that human and AI production are increasingly being combined rather than treated as mutually exclusive.
Fiverr's data also highlights a changing role for freelancers. More than three-quarters of respondents in each surveyed category said clients are increasingly seeking advice and expertise rather than simply outsourcing execution. The figure reached 83% among search specialists, 79% among e-commerce specialists and 76% among UGC freelancers.
The economics of that shift are less straightforward. Sixty-one percent of search specialists said clients expect lower prices because AI is involved, while 89% said clients continue to evaluate them primarily on outcomes rather than the tools used. The finding suggests that AI may reduce the cost of some production tasks while increasing the importance of strategy, validation and specialist judgment.
E-commerce operations are undergoing a similar transition. Fifty-seven percent of e-commerce specialists reported higher demand for store management, while 43% reported increased requests for both Shopify optimization and conversion-rate optimization. Fiverr's internal data also showed CRO services increasing 12% over the same six-month period.
For retailers, the implications extend beyond selecting individual marketing services. Search optimization, creator content and storefront performance increasingly operate as parts of the same customer journey. A brand may need to appear in an AI-generated recommendation, provide credible content when the shopper investigates it, establish trust through creator content and then remove friction from the checkout experience.
The timing is also significant. Fiverr reports that 50% of surveyed search specialists believe businesses underestimate how long optimization takes to produce results, while 28% recommend starting search work at least three to four months before peak season.
The holiday marketing environment is developing around a hybrid model of AI-assisted production and human-led strategy. Fiverr's findings show retailers increasing demand for GEO, UGC and e-commerce management at the same time that specialists report greater involvement in planning and advisory work.
The trend also reflects a wider pattern in Fiverr's 2026 research. Its Business Trends Index found that businesses are increasing AI-related content production while continuing to invest in human editing and creative expertise. Searches for AI video and animation services rose 278% in the company's comparison period, while video editing demand also increased.
This suggests that AI adoption is not necessarily eliminating human-led marketing services. Instead, it is changing where human expertise is applied: strategy, creative direction, audience understanding, validation and optimization.
For retailers, the emerging search environment makes an either-or approach to SEO and GEO increasingly difficult to sustain. Traditional SEO remains important for building durable organic visibility, while generative search introduces another layer in which brands need to be accurately represented and discoverable.
The same principle applies to content. AI can accelerate ideation and production, but creator-led content can provide experiences that are difficult to replicate through purely synthetic outputs. Fiverr's survey therefore points toward a blended operating model in which technology handles parts of production while specialists remain responsible for decisions that affect relevance, credibility and commercial performance.
For holiday campaigns, the practical implication is timing. Search visibility requires lead time, creator content requires production planning and e-commerce optimization needs to be in place before traffic peaks. Retailers waiting until the shopping window opens may have less opportunity to build these assets effectively.
