Clutch Finds AI Use Can Weaken Consumer Trust on Social Media

Clutch has released new research examining consumer attitudes toward artificial intelligence on social media, finding that widespread exposure to AI-generated content has not translated into universal acceptance. The research found that 53% of consumers are less likely to purchase from brands they know use AI in social media content, highlighting a potential trust challenge for marketers adopting generative AI.

The findings are based on a survey of 601 consumers conducted in August 2026, according to Clutch. While 86% of respondents said they had encountered AI-generated content on social media, the research suggests that familiarity with the technology does not necessarily remove concerns about authenticity, disclosure and data use.

Transparency emerged as one of the strongest themes. Nearly 90% of consumers said brands and creators should disclose AI-generated social media content. The finding points to a growing expectation that marketers distinguish between human-created and AI-generated material rather than allowing audiences to make assumptions about how content was produced.

The research also indicates that consumer sentiment varies according to the purpose of AI-generated content. While 42% of respondents view AI positively for educational content, 64% said they would trust a brand or creator less if products were misrepresented using AI-generated content. The contrast suggests that consumers may be more receptive to AI when it provides utility but less accepting when it affects perceived authenticity or product representation.

Influencer marketing presents another challenge. Clutch found that 71% of consumers would question a human influencer’s recommendation if AI was used to create their content, while 45% said they would not knowingly engage with or trust AI influencers.

Brands appear to retain an advantage over influencers for product recommendations, with nearly 40% of respondents saying they trust brands more compared with 14% who trust influencers more. However, that advantage may be vulnerable when consumers believe AI is being used without sufficient transparency.

Privacy represents a parallel concern. 51% of consumers said they are uncomfortable with AI analyzing their activity to personalize content, while 67% identified data collection as their biggest concern. For marketers, this creates a second layer of trust management beyond disclosure of AI-generated creative.

The results suggest that AI adoption in social media marketing is increasingly becoming a governance and customer-experience issue, not simply a content-production decision. Marketers may need to balance efficiency gains from generative AI with disclosure practices, human oversight and clear boundaries around personalization and data collection.

Market Landscape

Generative AI is becoming increasingly embedded in marketing workflows, from content creation and campaign development to personalization and customer engagement. Clutch’s findings indicate that consumer acceptance can depend heavily on how AI is used, particularly when authenticity, recommendations, product claims or personal data are involved.

Strategic Outlook

For brands, the opportunity is to use AI where it improves relevance or utility without weakening credibility. Clear disclosure, human review and responsible data practices could become increasingly important differentiators as consumers become more familiar with AI-generated marketing content.
