marketing customer acquisition

Claire’s is bringing paid media, SEO and customer journey measurement closer to its physical retail strategy as it targets Gen Alpha. The fashion and piercing retailer has selected integrated media agency WITHIN to lead its paid media and SEO efforts, with a focus on connecting online discovery to in-store behavior.
Claire’s is handing paid media and SEO responsibilities to WITHIN as the retailer attempts to build a more connected digital-to-physical customer journey around its piercing business and its broader push toward Gen Alpha.
Announced October 7, the partnership will have WITHIN connect media strategy, customer behavior and measurement across Claire’s digital and physical channels. The agency says its work will use a full-funnel, lifetime-value approach rather than measuring campaigns primarily through short-term customer acquisition costs.
The distinction is important for a retailer whose most valuable customer actions do not necessarily happen online. A consumer may search for piercing styles, compare locations or research safety information before visiting a Claire’s store. Another customer may walk into a location and decide to get pierced without having planned the visit.
WITHIN’s strategy is designed around those different paths. For customers planning ahead, paid search and organic search can capture existing intent. For spontaneous store visitors, media measurement needs to account for an offline conversion that may not look like a conventional ecommerce transaction.
That makes the partnership less about simply outsourcing SEO or paid advertising and more about connecting marketing measurement to physical retail outcomes.
Claire’s has been upgrading its piercing experience as part of a broader repositioning around “modern girlhood.” The company says the new experience is rolling out nationwide with updated clinical standards, enhanced training, an elevated environment and a refreshed visual identity.
The challenge for its marketing stack is therefore increasingly omnichannel: how to identify demand online, influence customers before they reach a store and determine which digital interactions contribute to a valuable in-person experience.
Research suggests that retailers cannot treat younger consumers as purely digital shoppers. Deloitte found that 73% of Gen Z consumers shop in person at least once a week, while 56% of consumers research online before making purchases in stores. Although Gen Z is older than Claire’s core Gen Alpha target, the findings illustrate the hybrid shopping behavior retailers increasingly need to accommodate.
McKinsey’s 2026 consumer research points in the same direction. Social media has become the most important channel for Gen Z across parts of the purchase journey, including discovery and buying, while physical stores remain important to older consumers.
For enterprise marketing teams, the implication is broader than Claire’s. Paid media and SEO are increasingly being evaluated as components of a connected customer journey rather than isolated acquisition channels. That requires marketers to reconcile search intent, media exposure, customer lifetime value, store visits and eventual purchases.
WITHIN already positions its enterprise SEO offering around SEO, answer-engine optimization, generative-engine optimization, paid media, creative, conversion optimization and user experience. The Claire’s engagement gives that integrated model a particularly relevant retail use case: a brand where digital intent can ultimately culminate in a physical experience.
The competitive landscape includes agencies and technology platforms that increasingly combine paid media, SEO, analytics, customer data and AI-driven optimization. The differentiator will be whether those systems can demonstrate incremental business value across channels rather than simply report clicks, rankings or attributed conversions.
For Claire’s, the test will be whether its marketing infrastructure can make an increasingly physical brand experience visible in digital measurement—and whether that visibility improves how the company acquires and retains its next generation of customers.
Retail marketing is moving toward an omnichannel measurement model in which search, social, paid advertising, ecommerce and physical stores are treated as connected parts of the customer journey.
WITHIN competes in a market that includes integrated agencies as well as enterprise platforms from Google, Adobe and Salesforce. Those ecosystems increasingly connect advertising, analytics, customer data and personalization, while specialist agencies can differentiate through execution across channels.
The Claire’s engagement highlights a particularly difficult measurement problem: an online interaction can influence an offline transaction that occurs days later. Connecting those signals requires stronger identity, attribution, analytics and customer lifetime-value models.
The next phase of retail marketing will likely focus less on dividing budgets between “digital” and “store” marketing and more on understanding how each channel contributes to customer lifetime value.
For Claire’s, that is especially relevant as it targets younger consumers whose journeys can move rapidly between social platforms, search, websites and physical locations. The combination of paid media, SEO and unified measurement gives the brand a framework for capturing those transitions.
The longer-term opportunity is to make store outcomes part of the optimization loop. If Claire’s can identify which searches, audiences and media exposures drive valuable in-store customers, marketing investment can be optimized around business outcomes rather than channel-level metrics.
