A new analysis of U.S. manufacturing websites points to widespread technical, search-visibility and buyer-experience gaps that could make it harder for industrial companies to communicate their capabilities online.
Cazbah, a digital marketing agency focused on small and midsize B2B manufacturers, analyzed 528 eligible U.S. manufacturing and industrial websites for its 2026 State of the Manufacturing Website Industry report. The study examines website technical health, organic search visibility, backlink profiles and elements that influence how prospective buyers navigate supplier websites.
The research does not classify individual websites as successful or unsuccessful. Instead, Cazbah presents the findings as benchmarks and recommends that manufacturers compare them with first-party analytics, Google Search Console data, RFQ activity, lead quality and sales outcomes.
The scope of the datasets also varied. Technical audit records covered 496 websites, organic visibility data covered 507, and backlink records covered 525. Technical audits examined up to 50 pages per site.
The report found that many industrial websites contain fundamental elements that are incomplete or inconsistent.
Among audited websites, 67.5% had at least one page missing a meta description, while 62.1% had at least one low-word-count page. Another 60.5% used non-descriptive anchor text, and 51.4% had at least one page without an H1 heading.
These issues do not necessarily mean an entire website is poorly optimized. A website qualifies for a metric if the issue occurs on at least one page within the audited footprint.
Still, their prevalence indicates that technical and on-page SEO remains an unresolved issue across a substantial portion of the sample.
The report also found that 29.4% of websites returned at least one 4xx status, while 25.6% contained at least one broken internal link.
For industrial websites, broken or inaccessible content can have consequences beyond search performance. Product specifications, certifications, technical documents and RFQ forms are often important parts of the supplier-evaluation process.
If those resources cannot be reached, buyers may abandon the research process or seek information from another supplier.
One of the report's more notable findings concerns structured data.
Cazbah found that 78% of the analyzed websites had no Schema.org markup detected across their audited footprint.
Structured data provides search engines with machine-readable information about webpages and entities. Its absence does not automatically prevent a website from ranking, nor does adding Schema guarantee improved visibility.
However, structured data can help search engines interpret certain types of information and may support eligibility for relevant search features when implemented correctly.
The finding becomes more significant as search increasingly incorporates structured understanding of products, organizations, services and other entities.
For manufacturers with complex product catalogs and technical capabilities, clearly structured information can provide an additional layer of context for search systems.
The report also identified limitations in organic search visibility.
Cazbah found that 28.8% of the websites ranked for fewer than 100 organic keywords, while 18.9% received fewer than 100 estimated monthly organic visits.
Those figures are based on third-party estimates rather than website analytics. They therefore should not be interpreted as actual traffic sessions.
Nevertheless, limited keyword coverage can indicate that a website has not developed substantial visibility across the range of product, capability, application and industry searches relevant to its target market.
For manufacturers, this can be particularly important because purchasing research is often highly specific.
A prospective buyer may search for a particular material, manufacturing process, tolerance, component, application or certification rather than the manufacturer's general category.
A website that contains only broad company-level information may therefore miss opportunities to appear for highly specific searches.
The study found that 30.1% of websites had a third-party Authority Score below 10.
Authority Score is a proprietary metric from Semrush and should not be treated as a direct Google ranking score.
Cazbah interprets the finding as an indication of limited external recognition or other authority constraints within that particular scoring model.
For manufacturers, external authority can be supported by relevant industry publications, associations, suppliers, customers and other credible sources that reference the company.
However, authority alone cannot compensate for poor website fundamentals.
The report recommends addressing access and buyer-path problems first, followed by improvements to high-value capability, product, industry, application and RFQ pages.
Industrial websites have a different information burden from many consumer websites.
Engineers may need specifications covering materials, tolerances, machinery, processes and applications. Procurement teams may look for certifications, quality controls, service territories and contact information.
Operations leaders may need evidence of capacity, delivery capabilities and production processes.
This makes website architecture particularly important.
A manufacturer can have technically sound SEO but still create a poor buying experience if essential information is difficult to find. Conversely, a visually attractive website can underperform in search if its technical structure and content do not clearly communicate what the company offers.
The report's central implication is therefore less about individual SEO elements and more about connecting technical performance with buyer intent.
Manufacturing marketing has historically relied heavily on sales teams, distributors, trade shows and established supplier relationships. Digital research has changed that process, particularly as B2B buyers increasingly conduct independent research before contacting vendors.
That makes a manufacturer's website an important part of supplier discovery and evaluation.
Search visibility is also becoming more complex as traditional search results coexist with AI-generated answers and other discovery interfaces.
For industrial companies, this creates pressure to make technical information clear, authoritative and machine-readable without sacrificing usability for human buyers.
The challenge is particularly pronounced for small and midsize manufacturers, which may have limited marketing resources and websites that were built primarily as corporate brochures rather than demand-generation systems.
Cazbah recommends a prioritized approach rather than treating website improvement as a cosmetic redesign.
The first priority is fixing broken navigation, inaccessible resources and failed RFQ pathways. Next comes strengthening high-value pages that explain capabilities, products, applications and industries.
Structured data, internal linking and external authority can then support broader discoverability, while ongoing measurement connects website performance to inquiries, qualified leads, RFQs, pipeline and revenue.
This sequence reflects a broader shift in B2B SEO: website optimization increasingly needs to be connected to business outcomes rather than evaluated through rankings alone.
The Cazbah research does not establish that any individual technical issue caused lost traffic, leads or revenue. But the frequency of these issues across the sample suggests that manufacturing companies have considerable room to improve the digital infrastructure supporting buyer research.
