marketing customer acquisition

New Zealand's small businesses are facing a difficult operating environment while many still struggle to build a strong digital presence. Christchurch-based C i Marketing is targeting that gap with Debut, a fully managed website service designed to give smaller businesses professional web design, copywriting, hosting and search optimisation without the cost and complexity of a conventional agency engagement.
The launch comes as business failures remain elevated across New Zealand. Companies Office data shows 710 liquidator appointments in the first quarter of 2026, up 4.9% from the same quarter a year earlier. The agency's latest annual figures also show that 2,867 companies entered liquidation during 2025, the highest annual total since 2010.
That environment makes customer acquisition increasingly important for small businesses, particularly those competing in local markets where search visibility and a credible website can influence whether a prospective customer makes contact.
C i Marketing says Debut was created after years of seeing small businesses fall between two options: inexpensive DIY website builders that require owners to handle strategy and implementation themselves, and conventional agency projects that can be difficult to justify at an earlier stage of business development.
The new service attempts to create a middle ground. Rather than offering a stripped-down template product, C i Marketing says its team developed Debut around the capabilities it considers necessary for a professional small-business website, including strategy, copywriting, visual design, photography, video, digital marketing and technical SEO.
Every Debut site is professionally written, designed, hosted and optimised for search. Ecommerce is not part of the standard offering yet, although the company says an ecommerce capability is in development.
The proposition arrives as New Zealand businesses continue to identify affordability and digital expertise as barriers to greater technology adoption. MBIE's 2026 digital capability research found that 51% of New Zealand businesses believe they would benefit from making greater use of digital tools or becoming more online. The research also found that businesses are particularly interested in SEO, online advertising and digital marketing, while affordability, return on investment and choosing the right tools remain significant barriers.
That makes Debut relevant beyond website design. For a small business, the website increasingly functions as part of its customer acquisition infrastructure: it provides information for search engines, establishes credibility, supports local discovery and gives prospects a destination after encountering the business through social media, advertising or referrals.
The competitive landscape is crowded. Wix, Squarespace, Shopify, WordPress and other website platforms have dramatically reduced the technical barriers to publishing online. AI is also making copywriting, design and site generation increasingly accessible.
C i Marketing is therefore competing less on the ability to build a website and more on managed execution. Its pitch is that business owners should not have to become designers, SEO specialists or digital marketers simply to establish a credible online presence.
That distinction could become increasingly important as search itself changes. Google's AI-powered search features and emerging answer engines are making structured, authoritative and technically accessible web content more important, even as traditional organic clicks face pressure from AI-generated answers.
For C i Marketing, the opportunity is to turn Debut into an entry point for businesses that previously could not justify agency services. For customers, the value will ultimately depend on whether professionally built sites generate measurable improvements in discovery, enquiries and revenue—not simply whether they look better.
C i Marketing was founded by Elizabeth Slade in Christchurch in 2011. The company says Debut represents an effort to extend its marketing expertise to smaller businesses through a more standardised delivery model.
New Zealand has roughly 600,000 small businesses, representing about 97% of all firms. MBIE says small businesses are therefore central to the country's economic activity, while its latest research shows continued demand for practical digital support.
The website market is simultaneously being reshaped by AI. Generative tools can reduce the cost of creating copy, images and layouts, but they do not automatically solve positioning, technical SEO, information architecture or conversion strategy.
That leaves room for managed digital services that combine technology with human expertise.
Debut reflects a broader shift in SMB MarTech: simplifying the technology stack without eliminating the strategic layer.
C i Marketing's challenge will be demonstrating that its standardised model can retain agency-level quality while remaining affordable for smaller businesses. If it succeeds, the service could become a scalable customer-acquisition entry point rather than simply another website package.
The bigger opportunity lies in connecting website infrastructure with SEO, AI-search visibility, analytics and digital advertising. That would move the proposition from “build a website” toward “build the digital foundation for customer acquisition.”
