European home improvement retailer BAUHAUS has deployed an AI-powered warehouse automation system from XYZ Robotics at its central distribution center in Krefeld, Germany, marking another step in the growing adoption of intelligent robotics across enterprise supply chains. The deployment automates the complete inbound goods receiving process—from unloading shipping containers to building shelf-ready pallets—highlighting how AI and robotics are reshaping warehouse operations to improve efficiency, worker safety, and supply chain resilience.
BAUHAUS has partnered with XYZ Robotics to automate its inbound goods receiving operations at its central warehouse in Krefeld, Germany, introducing an AI-powered robotic system designed to streamline one of the most labor-intensive stages of warehouse logistics.
The deployment combines two autonomous robotic platforms—RockyOne and RockyOne SE—to automate the journey of goods from shipping containers to warehouse-ready pallets. The implementation reflects a broader industry trend as retailers and logistics operators increasingly invest in AI-powered warehouse automation to address labor shortages, improve operational efficiency, and build more resilient supply chains.
Goods receiving is one of the most challenging warehouse processes because inbound shipments often contain cartons of different sizes, weights, and stacking configurations. Traditional warehouse automation systems typically perform best in highly standardized environments, while mixed-SKU container unloading has remained heavily dependent on manual labor.
BAUHAUS, which operates more than 290 home improvement centers across 19 European countries, manages thousands of inbound shipments daily at its Krefeld distribution facility. The warehouse processes more than 10,000 stock keeping units (SKUs), creating a complex logistics environment where flexibility is as important as speed.
XYZ Robotics' solution is designed to automate this variability rather than requiring standardized packaging. RockyOne, an autonomous mobile manipulation robot, enters shipping containers and unloads cartons regardless of their orientation or dimensions. As products move through the workflow, an integrated barcode scanning system identifies each carton, enabling real-time sorting and inventory tracking.
The process then transitions to RockyOne SE, which automatically assembles storage-ready pallets based on predefined palletization rules. The result is an integrated inbound logistics workflow that reduces manual handling while producing pallets optimized for warehouse storage and downstream distribution.
Warehouse automation combines robotics, artificial intelligence, machine vision, and automation software to perform repetitive logistics tasks with minimal human intervention. These technologies help distribution centers improve throughput, reduce errors, and enhance workplace safety while allowing employees to focus on supervisory and value-added responsibilities.
For warehouse employees, the shift is equally significant. Manual container unloading often requires repetitive lifting in confined spaces and physically demanding conditions, increasing the risk of injuries and workforce turnover. Under the new operating model, employees supervise robotic operations through a tablet-based interface rather than performing continuous manual unloading.
According to BAUHAUS, the robotic system has operated continuously with minimal manual intervention since deployment, enabling warehouse teams to dedicate more time to operational planning, quality control, and exception management instead of repetitive physical tasks.
The implementation reflects accelerating investment in intelligent warehouse automation across retail, manufacturing, and third-party logistics industries.
