Workato has expanded access to Otto, its AI superagent designed to execute multi-step projects across business applications, making the product available to individuals and teams through Slack, the web and SMS.
The self-service launch follows Workato's May 2026 introduction of Otto for enterprise employees. The company is offering a 30-day trial as it moves the technology beyond enterprise deployments and into a broader user base.
The expansion reflects a growing shift in enterprise AI from assistants that generate answers or complete isolated tasks toward agents designed to plan, execute and coordinate work across multiple applications.
Workato describes Otto as a "multiplayer" AI agent because individual Ottos can collaborate with one another. The company says an Otto can manage a project from an initial objective through execution and reporting rather than requiring users to provide a new instruction after each step.
Much of the current workplace AI market remains focused on individual productivity tasks: drafting emails, summarizing documents, retrieving information, generating code or answering questions.
Workato is targeting a different part of the workflow. Otto is designed to receive a broader goal, determine the sequence of actions required and execute those actions using the applications where employees already work.
Examples provided by the company include running a marketing campaign from brief to assets, monitoring major sales opportunities and producing updates, or preparing an executive briefing based on information gathered across business systems.
That approach changes the unit of automation from a task to a project.
The distinction matters because many business processes contain dependencies that cannot be resolved by a single prompt. A campaign may require stakeholder feedback, asset creation, approvals and scheduling. A sales-monitoring process may require checking multiple records, identifying changes and notifying the appropriate people.
An agent capable of managing those steps could potentially reduce the number of manual handoffs between employees and applications.
Otto operates on Workato's AI control and execution platform and uses Anthropic's Claude through the Claude Agent SDK.
Claude handles the agent's core reasoning and decision-making, while Workato provides the execution layer connecting the agent to business applications.
The distinction between the model and the execution infrastructure is important in enterprise AI. Large language models can reason over information and generate instructions, but completing business work requires access to systems such as CRM platforms, email, calendars, document repositories and development tools.
Workato says Otto currently connects natively with more than 20 commonly used work applications, including Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Drive, Outlook, GitLab, GitHub and Shopify. It can also access Workato's ecosystem of more than 1,400 connectors and remote Model Context Protocol servers.
That connectivity gives Otto a broader operating environment than a standalone chatbot.
Workato is also differentiating Otto through persistent memory and agent-to-agent collaboration.
The company says each Otto can build a memory of how an individual or organization works, including where information is stored, how processes are performed and which people should be involved in particular tasks.
The system is designed to keep private context separate while allowing relevant organizational knowledge to be shared more broadly.
The second component is collaboration between individual Ottos. Every user in a shared workspace receives an Otto, and those agents can coordinate work with one another.
For example, one Otto could collect feedback from another employee while another handles a related task. The intended result is fewer manual coordination steps for employees.
This "multiplayer" architecture is an emerging direction in enterprise agent design, but it also introduces governance questions. Organizations will need visibility into what agents are doing, which permissions they possess and how information moves between agents.
Because Otto can act directly inside business applications, access control becomes a central consideration.
Workato says its Verified User Access technology governs the permissions available to Otto. The company says the agent does not retain permissions beyond those granted to the user.
That model is intended to keep agent activity tied to existing user authorization rather than creating a separate, broadly privileged identity for the AI.
The approach is particularly relevant as agents move from generating recommendations to taking actions such as updating CRM records, commenting on project-management tickets or modifying documents.
The risks also increase with autonomy. An incorrect answer from an AI assistant can generally be reviewed before use. An autonomous agent with permission to update systems can create operational consequences if its reasoning or context is wrong.
Consequently, permission management, auditability, approval controls and data isolation will become increasingly important competitive factors in enterprise agent platforms.
Workato enters an increasingly crowded enterprise-agent market that includes Microsoft, Salesforce, ServiceNow, Google, Anthropic and numerous automation specialists.
The competitive divide is becoming less about whether software companies offer an AI assistant and more about how much operational authority those systems receive.
Some platforms are embedding agents inside existing productivity or enterprise applications. Others are building horizontal orchestration layers that connect agents to multiple systems.
Workato's positioning sits closer to the latter category. Its existing integration infrastructure gives Otto access to a large connector ecosystem, while Claude provides the underlying reasoning capability.
That combination could be valuable for organizations operating heterogeneous technology environments. However, it also means Workato must demonstrate that autonomous execution remains reliable as workflows become increasingly complex.
Making Otto available through Slack, web and SMS broadens the potential use cases beyond conventional desktop-based automation.
SMS access, for example, could allow employees to request updates or initiate work while away from a computer. The ability to return an audio briefing could also make agents useful for executives and mobile teams.
The more significant development is the shift toward agents that remain active across an entire workflow.
If these systems become reliable enough to manage projects with limited supervision, enterprise automation could move from predefined workflows toward dynamic, goal-driven execution. That would represent a meaningful change in how organizations approach business-process automation.
But adoption will depend on more than technical capability. Companies will need clear governance frameworks covering permissions, human approvals, sensitive data, accountability and monitoring.
Workato's broader launch provides an opportunity to test whether users are willing to delegate meaningful project execution to AI agents rather than using them primarily as productivity assistants.
