Online reviews have become one of the most influential factors in consumer purchasing decisions, according to new research from LocalImpact. The company's State of Online Reviews 2026 report found that 88% of U.S. consumers have chosen not to buy from a business after reading negative online reviews, underscoring the growing importance of online reputation management for marketers, local businesses, and customer experience teams.

A strong online reputation has evolved from a competitive advantage into a business necessity, as consumers increasingly rely on digital reviews to evaluate brands before making purchasing decisions. New research from LocalImpact highlights just how influential online ratings and customer feedback have become, revealing that nearly nine in ten U.S. consumers have avoided a business because of negative reviews.

The findings come from The State of Online Reviews 2026, a survey of 1,068 U.S. adults examining how consumers discover, evaluate, and contribute online reviews. The report provides new insight into the growing role of reputation management in digital marketing strategies, particularly for local businesses competing for customer attention across search engines and review platforms.

Online reputation management is the practice of monitoring, responding to, and improving customer reviews and public feedback across digital platforms. It helps businesses strengthen consumer trust, improve local search visibility, and influence purchasing decisions by maintaining a positive online presence.

The research found that online reviews have become nearly universal in the customer journey. Approximately 92% of consumers reported reading online reviews during the past year, while 67% said they consult reviews frequently—or before every purchase—demonstrating that customer-generated content is now deeply embedded in buying behavior.

One of the report's most notable findings is the growing importance of star ratings as an initial decision filter. According to the survey, 78% of consumers are unwilling to consider businesses with ratings below four stars, while 27% limit purchases to companies maintaining ratings of at least 4.5 stars.

This behavior suggests that consumers increasingly make preliminary judgments before reading detailed customer feedback. Ratings act as an immediate trust signal, with written reviews serving to validate or challenge those initial impressions.

Review volume also plays an important role. Nearly 43% of respondents said they typically read between four and six reviews before making a purchasing decision, while almost one-third review seven or more customer comments before committing to a business. For marketers, this indicates that maintaining a consistent flow of authentic customer feedback is becoming as important as achieving high average ratings.

The study also reinforces Google's dominant position in the online review ecosystem. Around 86% of respondents said they use Google to research reviews, significantly outperforming platforms such as Yelp, Facebook, and Trustpilot. Consumers also reported consulting reviews on ecommerce marketplaces and community-driven platforms, including Amazon, Reddit, and YouTube, reflecting increasingly diverse research behaviors before purchases.

For businesses, review management extends beyond collecting positive ratings. The survey found that 70% of consumers expect companies to respond to customer reviews within one to three days. More importantly, 78% said a thoughtful response to negative feedback increases their trust in a business, highlighting customer service as a critical component of reputation management.

This trend reflects broader changes in digital customer experience. Consumers increasingly evaluate not only products and services but also how organizations engage with customer concerns in public forums. Transparent, professional responses can demonstrate accountability and reinforce brand credibility even when negative experiences occur.

The report also found that customers are becoming more active participants in the review ecosystem. Seventy-two percent of respondents have written an online review themselves, with positive customer experiences cited as the leading motivation. More than one-third said they publish reviews on the same day as their purchase, while most contribute feedback within a week of interacting with a business.

For enterprise marketers, the findings reinforce the strategic importance of customer experience management, local SEO, and reputation monitoring. Online reviews influence more than brand perception—they also affect local search rankings, conversion rates, and customer acquisition costs.

According to BrightLocal's Local Consumer Review Survey, the overwhelming majority of consumers read online reviews before visiting local businesses, while Gartner has consistently identified customer experience as one of the primary competitive differentiators influencing long-term business performance. Together, these trends demonstrate how reputation management has become a core component of modern MarTech strategies rather than simply a customer support function.

From a competitive perspective, businesses that actively monitor reviews, respond promptly, and encourage authentic customer feedback are likely to strengthen trust while improving visibility in local search results. As AI-powered search experiences and recommendation engines increasingly surface review data alongside business information, reputation signals are expected to play an even greater role in influencing customer decisions.

Looking ahead, online reputation management is becoming tightly integrated with customer experience platforms, marketing automation systems, and analytics solutions. Organizations that combine review monitoring with broader customer engagement strategies will be better positioned to build trust, improve local discoverability, and drive sustainable business growth in an increasingly review-driven digital marketplace.

Online reputation management has become a strategic pillar of modern MarTech as consumers increasingly rely on reviews before making purchasing decisions. Search engines, AI-powered recommendations, and local discovery platforms now incorporate review signals into visibility and trust rankings. As businesses invest in customer experience technologies, review management is evolving into an essential component of digital marketing, local SEO, and brand strategy.
