Answer engine optimization is moving from an emerging search tactic toward a larger enterprise marketing discipline, and Conductor is reorganizing its product strategy around that shift. The company says answer engine optimization (AEO) will become the central focus of its next phase, a year after launching Conductor AI, while Chief Product Officer Wei Zheng takes over as CEO from co-founder Seth Besmertnik.

Zheng has led Conductor's product organization for five years and was closely involved in developing Conductor AI and the company's AI and data strategy. Besmertnik will remain involved as a member of the company's Board of Directors.

The strategic change comes as traditional search behavior increasingly overlaps with AI-generated answers. Rather than treating AEO and search engine optimization as competing disciplines, Conductor is positioning them as interconnected practices. The company's argument is that authoritative content, strong technical discoverability and structured information can influence visibility across both conventional search engines and AI-powered answer interfaces.

That distinction matters for enterprise marketers. Google Search remains a major discovery channel, while AI systems such as ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Perplexity are changing how users research products, services and companies. Marketers therefore increasingly need to understand not only whether their content ranks, but whether their brand is represented accurately and prominently when AI systems generate answers.

Conductor says hundreds of enterprises have adopted Conductor AI during its first year, including Charter, Airbnb, Coca-Cola and Atlassian. The company reports 12X year-over-year customer growth for the product and says new-logo growth has tripled quarter over quarter. Those figures are company-reported rather than independently audited.

The company is also expanding its AEO technology beyond its own interface. Its AgentStack initiative uses integrations, APIs and Model Context Protocol (MCP) connections to make Conductor intelligence available within AI models and enterprise workflows. Conductor says platforms and agencies including Optimizely, Acquia, Havas and Capgemini are building on its technology.

The move places Conductor in an increasingly competitive category. SEO platforms such as Semrush, Ahrefs and BrightEdge are adding capabilities designed to help brands understand visibility in AI-generated search experiences, while specialist AEO vendors are emerging around monitoring, citation analysis, prompt intelligence and content optimization.

The distinction between these approaches is becoming less straightforward. AI visibility depends partly on the same foundations that have historically supported organic search: crawlable websites, authoritative content, relevant entities, structured information and strong topical coverage. The newer layer is understanding how AI systems synthesize those signals and why particular brands or sources appear in generated answers.

Conductor's strategy therefore represents an expansion of enterprise SEO rather than a complete departure from it. Its platform already combines SEO intelligence, website optimization and content capabilities, giving the company an existing data layer from which to approach AEO.

For marketing teams, the operational challenge will be turning AI visibility measurement into repeatable optimization. Knowing that a brand was mentioned in an AI answer is only an initial signal. Enterprises increasingly need to understand the sources influencing that answer, identify content gaps, improve their digital footprint and measure whether those changes affect visibility over time.

That is the product direction Conductor says it will pursue as Zheng takes the CEO role. The company plans to showcase additional AEO products at its C3 event in New York on October 28, making the leadership transition and product strategy part of a broader effort to establish AEO as an enterprise marketing infrastructure category.

Market Landscape

The search market is becoming more fragmented as traditional search engines coexist with generative AI interfaces. Google is integrating generative experiences into search, while OpenAI, Microsoft, Anthropic and other AI providers are building systems that can answer questions directly rather than simply returning ranked webpages.

This creates a new measurement problem for marketers. Traditional SEO platforms can track rankings, organic traffic and technical health, but AI answers require additional signals such as brand mentions, citations, source selection and representation within generated responses.

Conductor is competing in this emerging AEO market while maintaining its established SEO capabilities. Semrush, BrightEdge, Ahrefs and newer AEO-focused platforms are pursuing overlapping parts of the opportunity, making the convergence of SEO and AEO an increasingly important area of enterprise MarTech competition.

Strategic Outlook

AEO is likely to become less about optimizing isolated prompts and more about managing an organization's overall digital information footprint. AI systems draw from websites, third-party publications, structured data, reviews and other sources, making broad digital authority increasingly relevant.

For enterprise marketing organizations, this means SEO and AEO may increasingly share the same content, technical and data foundations. The important technology question is how platforms can turn AI visibility signals into actionable recommendations and connect those recommendations with existing content and SEO workflows.

Conductor's leadership transition reinforces that strategy. With Zheng moving from product leadership to CEO, the executive change places the architect of the company's AI and data strategy at the center of its next stage of product development.
